Ngozika Ekwelum, a former boxing coach in Anambra, has called on stakeholders to promote boxing by sponsoring the sport to competitive levels.
He also suggested creation of league divisions in order to discover budding talents.
Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria on Friday in Awka, Ekwelum said the amateur boxing cadre would not lack ability to represent the country in international competitions if such steps were taken.
Ekwelum said: “The country has the human materials to make great impact in the international boxing scene if effective programmes are put in place to discover them.
“Big organisations should join hands with the government in promoting boxing by institutionalising our boxing league structure as is the case in Germany where they have Uber league (division 1) and Unter league (division 2).
“With such a programme in place, there is no way Germany will be lacking talents to fill in all categories in all international competitions.”
Ekwelum, a former national heavyweight boxing champion, called on stakeholders to attract investors the same way Nigeria Basketball Federation did recently.
He said: “We all are witnesses to what NBBF did recently in attracting conglomerate such as Total Ltd in to sponsoring their sports with the release of N60 million to the body for nurturing their league.
“It takes seriousness from officials and stakeholders for such a deal to sail through.
“Nobody will blow your trumpet for you except you do it yourself.”
