A condemned prisoner, Rabi Ismail, who escaped from lawful custody in Hadejia Prison, Jigawa State on December 16, 2011, has been recaptured by the Intelligence Unit of the Nigerian Prisons Service with the support of operatives of the Department of State Services.
Ismail was sentenced to death by hanging for culpable homicide by a High Court in Kano on January 5, 2005.
She was subsequently held in Kaduna Central Prison from where she was transferred to Hadejia Prison before she escaped about six years ago.
The Controller General of Prisons, Ja’afaru Ahmed, expressed appreciation for the assistance rendered by sister security agencies, particularly those of the DSS and the Police, in arresting the fugitive.
Ahmed appealed to members of the public to continue to provide useful information on escapees and indeed any criminal element in their midst to security agents, noting that such outlaws pose security threat to the society.
He promised that security measures have been strengthened to prevent persons in prison custody from escaping.
He said escapees still at large will be fished out of their hiding no matter how long it takes to do so.
