As the Federal Road Safety Commission is drumming support for the new number plates in the country, suspected fraudsters are taking the advantage of the frenzy for the new number plates to defraud unsuspecting persons.
The revelation came to light following the of a man and his wife, suspected to have fraudulently produced dozens of the new number plates in Lagos State.
The suspects, simply identified as Baba and Mama Ayo, were arrested last month by police officers attached to the Denton Police Station, Lagos during a raid of their hideout at Ebute-Metta.
The couple were said to have used their shop as a cover for the production of the fake number plates.
They were said to have produced more than 100 of such fake number plates, which they have been selling to unsuspecting persons before luck ran out on them.
It was gathered that the police trailed the couple following a tip off from victims who reported the fraudulent couple to the police after they noticed that the number plates the couple sold to them were fake.
The police promptly arrested them.
The police recovered the fake number plates and other equipments used for its production while the couple were remanded in the cell for thorough investigation.
