The Nigeria Labour Congress has called for the probe of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission and its former Chairman, Dr. Sam Amadi.
This followed a statement credited to Amadi that the Senate has no right to order the reversal of the increase in electricity tariff.
The tariff was increased effective February 1, 2016 by 45 per cent.
The Senate however ordered its reversal and called for an investigation into the issue.
This followed a nationwide protest by organised labour against the tariff hike.
However, following Amadi’s position on the stand of the Senate on the tariff hike, organised labour on Sunday called for his probe and that of NERC.
In a statement by its President, Ayuba Wabba, the NLC said the statement by Amadi was “treacherous, shameful and saddening”.
The statement said Amadi was “being economical with the truth and his legal knowledge”, adding: “The duties of the Legislature, as defined by the constitution, include legislation, oversight and investigation.
“Amadi not only described the Senate directive as a ‘dangerous precedence’, but has instigated NERC not to obey the directive as ‘it would have put itself in a double bind between the executive and legislature and a violation of the provisions of the Act’.
“On our part, we demand that the directive of the NASS be respected and effected right away. We also demand that if any DISCO or GENCO does not have the requisite capacity, it should honourably surrender its possessory and proprietary rights to government as was the case with the Yola Electricity Company. The Yola company was honourable enough and reasons adduced by it, genuine.
“We will not fold our arms while a few individuals or companies or institutions further plunder and plunge this country into abyss.”
