Electoral Act: Buhari writes Senate to remove section barring political appointees from voting during primaries

President Muhammadu Buhari has written to Senate to remove Section 84 which stops political appointees of political parties from voting or be voted for during convention or congress.

Buhari had last week signed Electoral Act, he however urged the National Assembly to remove Clause 84 from the amendment bill.

Section 84(12) reads: “No political appointee at any level shall be a voting delegate or be voted for at the Convention or Congress of any political party for the purpose of the nomination of candidates for any election.”

The Senate President, Ahmad Lawan read the President Buhari’s letter on the floor immediately after the commencement of plenary session on Tuesday.
