An athlete representing Lagos State in Dambe event, Amao Usman, was beaten to a state of coma on Sunday by Army officers inside the National Stadium, Surulere, one of the venues of the National Sports Festival, Eko 2012.
Trouble started when Amao protested the result of his fight against his opponent from Yobe State by throwing his gloves on the floor.
The action infuriated the soldiers who pounced on him with their guns and beat the athlete.
A photo journalist with the Sun newspapers (names withheld), who took shots of the incident, was threatened by the soldiers.
He was forced to delete photographs he took during the incident before he was allowed to leave the scene.
Also on Sunday, another ugly incident was recorded at another venue, Agege Stadium.
It took the intervention of senior military personnel to bring the situation under control at the entrance of the Agege Stadium when soldiers clashed with their police counterparts.
Residents of the area, journalists and some athletes had to run for their safety, as the soldiers engage their guns shooting into the air.
Carol Okouoka was the heroine of Day Five of the ongoing 18th National Sports Festival as she won three gold medals for TEAM Rivers on Sunday.
Okouokha won the gold in the 63kg snatch when she lifted 96kg as Victoria Adesanmi of Team Akwa Ibom State settled for the silver after lifting 95kg while Team Lagos Joy Chima picked the bronze with 87kg lift.
In the clean and jerk event, Okouokha also lifted 118kg to win the gold at the expense of Adesanmi, who lifted 117kg while home girl, Chima settled for the bronze medal.
The Rivers girl led the total events with 214kg followed by Adesanmi of Akwa Ibom with 212kg while Chima clinched the bronze with a total lift of 203kg.
In the 69kg male event, Jubril Abubakar of Team Delta won the gold in snatch with a lift of 117kg as David Adeyemo of Team Bayelsa followed with 115kg while Iboro Ndarake with 112kg claimed the bronze medal.
Adeyemo in the clean and jerk event won the gold after lifting 150kg as Jubril Abubakar picked the silver medal with 147kg lift as Yohunna Jack of Team Plateau picked the bronze with a lift of 142kg.
Adeyemo gave Team Bayelsa another gold medal in the total events with a lift of 265kg as Abubakar followed with 264kg while Jack clinched the bronze medal with a total lift of 253kg.
And five days after the 18th National Sports Festival was officially declared open, Kwara State won her first gold medal.
Lekan Abdullahi, who competed in the table tennis event, defeated Ogunkunle I. from Ogun State in the final.
In a similar development, the Paralympians representing Kwara State also won three bronze medals in the table tennis event on Sunday.
Emmanuel Oyetobi, Bilikis Abdul Kadir and Ajarat Abdulmumin won three bronze medals for Team Kwara.
Kwara also have a chance to win either gold or silver medal on Monday as Aminat A. Abdullahih has booked a place in the final slated for Monday.
