Edaiken N’Uselu palace pulled down in Benin

The palace of the Edaiken N’Uselu, the palace of the Crown Prince and Heir apparent to Benin Kingdom, in Benin, Edo State has been pulled down.
A News Agency of Nigeria correspondent who visited the scene on Thursday reports that Crown Prince Eheneden Erediauwa was the last heir apparent that lived in the palace before his coronation as the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II.
One of the Oba of Benin Palace officials told NAN on condition of anonymity that the Edaiken palace has not been in use since the departure of the last crown Prince, who is now the Oba.
The official said: “Normally the palace is expected to go down because there is no occupant.
“The palace has not been in use since the departure of the crown prince Erediauwa before he became the Oba.”
NAN recalls that Prince Erediauwa left the Edaiken N’Uselu palace on October 8, 2016, for Eko-Ohae, where he started his coronation activities, before he was crowned as Oba on January 20, 2016.
Before the heir apparent to the throne is made Edaiken, he is first initiated into the Iwebo palace society, which is the most senior of the palace societies.
The society is responsible for the royal wardrobe and regalia, beads and ornaments worn by the Oba during important ceremonies.
The crown prince must attain the rank of Uko N’Iwebo before he can be made Edaiken.
In a situation where for any reason the Oba is not able to crown his Edaiken, some appropriate palace chiefs will take up the responsibility because no one can become an Oba except he has been crowned as Edaiken first.
The Edaiken’s palace is located at Uselu, Egor Local Government Area of Edo State.
