Senator Ike Ekweremadu, the Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, on Monday urged the Federal Government to ensure credible, free and fair polls in the forthcoming general elections.
Addressing the regional parliament at the opening of its extraordinary session in Abuja, Ekweremadu said Nigeria and the ECOWAS sub-region were committed to successful general elections in the country.
He reassured the international community that the forthcoming general elections in Nigeria would be free, fair, and peaceful.
He said: “It is important that we address the issue of the forthcoming general elections in Nigeria.
“We have no doubt that Nigeria will be peaceful before, during and after the elections and the country’s democracy will come out of the elections stronger.
“We want to call on the international community to continue to support us, even as we express gratitude to them for the assistance rendered to us so far.”
Simon Ossei-Mensah, the Fourth Deputy Speaker of the Parliament, also moved a motion for a resolution to express support for the holding of peaceful, free and fair elections in the country.
Osei-Mensah called for peace before, during and after the elections and urged all political parties to avoid “acrimonious campaigns”.
He also urged parties to “gracefully accept the outcome of the elections in the interest of unity, peace and development of the sub-region”.
