Prof. Edmund Nwana, Professor of Pathology, University of Abuja
Medical School, on Wednesday urged Nigerians to go for medical checkup
to prevent sudden death.
Nwana gave this advice while delivering a key note address at the FCT
Chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association Annual General Meeting in
Abuja.
The theme for this year’s AGM is: Sudden Death Syndrome: a Rising Epidemic.
Nwana said that cardiovascular diseases were the main causes of sudden
death around the world, especially when not properly managed.
He said that many people were hypertensive but did not know.
He said: “Often times you hear that the man suddenly drops dead.
“It is when we probably get to do autopsy you find this man had been
hypertensive for so long without knowing,
“Typically for some of them, they will say headache.
“Then they take Panadol and go away or they decide not to even do
medical checkup.
“They look at the cost implication and the stress.
“You do not need to travel abroad.
“There is no need for medical tourism.
“You can always have your medical practitioner check your blood pressure.”
Nwana advised Nigerians to go do medical checkup at least twice in a year.
Nwana added that other causes of sudden death include road accident,
congenital deformities and infections.
He said that many Nigerians indulged in self-medication, including
medical practitioners.
He said this also leads to sudden death in the long run.
Nwana advised Nigerians to modify their lifestyle by exercising
regularly and forming proper eating habits.
He added: “People should take it easy and try to relax, create some
time to walk and jug so you sweat.
“Do not always move around in a chauffeur-driven car.
“Eating habit is another problem.
“A lot of us are indulgent.
“Either we are over eating or over drinking.
“If you do not watch what you eat, you are actually digging your own
grave with your own teeth slowly over time.”
