The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has lauded the election of the National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Abdulwaheed Odusile, as President of the Federation of African Journalists.
In a statement issued on Saturday by his spokesman, Turaki Hassan, Dogara described Odusile’s election as another landmark achievement of Nigerian journalists.
The Speaker urged Odusile to bring his wealth of experience to bear on the development of the journalism profession and the protection of media freedom in Africa.
He also tasked the NUJ president to dedicate his tenure to enhancing professionalism in the continent so as to contribute to the enthronement of good democratic culture in Africa.
Dogara urged the FAJ president to focus attention on policies and programmes that aim to ensure the safety and security of Journalists.
Journalists, he said, have been subjected to all forms of hazards and insecurity in the discharge of their duties.
The Speaker commended FAJ, which is the African regional association of the International Federation of Journalists, for successfully holding its fourth congress in Abuja.
