Voters in Delta State on Saturday turned out in large numbers to vote during the local government elections across the state.
Expressing enthusiasm about the turnout of voters, Peter Onwusanya, the Speaker of Delta State House of Assembly, urged politicians and voters to remain calm and ensure peaceful conduct of the elections.
Speaking in Asaba during the election, the lawmaker also advised both politicians and the electorate not to regard the election as a “do-or-die” affair but to accept whatever was the outcome of the election in good faith.
According to Onwusanya, the losers should be able to congratulate the winners and the winners should carry everybody along in terms of provision of the dividends of democracy to the people.
The speaker commended the security agents for their efforts at ensuring peaceful election and total compliance with the restriction of movement in the state capital.
In his comment, Assemblyman, Pat Ajudua, representing Oshimili North Constituency in the state House of Assembly, commended the turnout of voters in the area.
In the same vein, Onyemaechi Mrakpor, the member representing Aniocha South Constituency in the state House of Assembly, said the Peoples Democratic Party had no opposition in the state.
The lawmaker, who lauded the organisation and the conduct of the elections, however, acknowledged that voting was delayed in most polling centres.
Mrakpor said: “Irrespective of the delay, the most important thing is that the materials have finally arrived in the centres and the exercise has begun.”
Keshi Alexander, an agent for the Labour Party, commended the conduct of the elections, saying that the turnout and security arrangement were laudable.
Alexander said: “I am impressed with what is happening here today.
“The conduct and turnout of our people to exercise their civic right is commendable.
“I also want to thank the security agencies for a job well done.
“The whole affair is good for our democracy.”
Osu Azuka, an agent of PDP, also lauded the general conduct and turnout of the people at the various polling centres across Ubulu-Uku Local Government Area.
