A top contender in the Delta State 2019 governorship election, Comrade Sunny Ofehe, who this week returned from the Netherlands, was on Saturday hosted in a town hall meeting by Deltans living in Nigeria’s commercial capital city of Lagos.
The town hall meeting, according to the aspirant, was organised by indigenes of Delta State in Lagos State to show support and solidarity towards his gubernatorial ambition in a State that is in dire need of accountable leadership.
Reacting to the choice of Lagos State as the welcome town hall party venue, Ofehe said: “The choice of Lagos as my first town hall meeting has generated a lot of concern by many of you who suggested that the town hall meeting should have been held in Delta State.
“The Lagos town hall meeting was organised and sponsored by my friends and Delta citizens living in Lagos.
“The idea was to welcome me back with a stakeholders meeting that will address many issues that relate to my consultations.
“Despite the rain the flooded the Lagos Island, many important dignitaries attended the event.
“There was enough time to engage in a Q & A.”
The vibrant intellectual Niger Delta activist will take his campaign home in Delta State on a date that will be announced soon.
Speaking to reporters shortly after the event, the gubernatorial aspirant said: “The next town hall meeting will be in Delta State with venue and date to be announced soon.
“I am most grateful to those who attended the event.
“The movement continues.”
Ofehe has been described as the back-bone of the intellectual side of the Niger Delta struggle.
He was said to have started the publication of a monthly Niger Delta Diaspora magazine, Inside Niger Delta Magazine.
The magazine has been said to be the first of its kind outside Nigeria.
His non-violent approach to his advocacy has endeared him to many.
Ofehe was said to have played prominent roles in bringing an end to hostage taking in the Niger Delta.
His campaign has led to specific release of Dutch kidnapped oil workers in recent times.
His uncompromising stance has brought him against people in government and even some of the militants groups.
Ofehe have been consulting with stakeholders in Delta State politics and his return it has been said will culminate in a systematic campaign towards his 2019 gubernatorial ambition.
