Court remands two men over alleged serial robberies with knife, rape

A Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos on Friday remanded two men in a Custodial Centre in Lagos over alleged serial robberies, rape of one of their victims and receipt of stolen goods.

The Chief Magistrate, A.O. Adedayo, who ordered their remand, said the case file should be duplicated and forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions for legal advice.

Adedayo then adjourned the case until September 14 for hearing.

The first defendant, Adeniyi Ajayi, 27, is facing a seven-count charge of conspiracy, armed robbery and rape.

The second defendant, Oluwaseyi Yusuf, 39, is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and receipt of stolen items.

Their pleas were, however, not taken by the court because of the nature of their offences.

The Prosecutor, Joseph Eboseremen, told the court that Ajayi, between April and June, robbed two men and two women of their valuables, while armed with knife and raped one of their victims.

“On April 25, at 2am at 25, Hughes ACME Street, Alagomeji, Yaba, Lagos, Ajayi robbed one Mr. Thomas Eboh of his laptop, jewellery, a pair of Adidas shoes and money, all valued at N1 million, while armed with knife.

“On May 10, at 2:30am at Bonny Way, Yaba, Lagos, he also robbed one Mrs. Cecilia Ayoola of her two Itel phones, valued at N150,000 and N40,000 respectively, totalling N190,000.

“On June 10 at Yaba, the defendant robbed Sanni Habeeblahi of his two laptops, Samsung and Nokia phones valued at N381,500.

“On June 24, at 2:30am at 33, Akinwunmi Street, Alagomeji, Yaba, Ajayi robbed another woman (names withheld) of her three phones, jewellery and money, all valued at N232,000 and also raped her, while armed with knife.”

Eboseremen said Yusuf conspired with Ajayi to rob and receive two laptops, one Samsung phone and a Nokia phone, all valued at N380,000 from him, knowing that they were stolen.

Eboseremen further said the offences contravened Sections 1 (1) (2) (a) (b), 6(a) of the Armed Robbery and Fire Arms Special Tribunal Cap Rll Law of Nigeria, 2004 and Section 260 (1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
