The Delta State Independent Electoral Commission proposes to spent N4.3billion to conduct the 2014 local government elections.
The Chairman of the commission, Moses Ogbe, made this known when he defended the figure before the State House of Assembly Committee on Establishment in Asaba.
Ogbe said the money would be used to provide safety and security measures for the commission’s personnel and sensitive and non-sensitive materials for the election.
He said that part of the fund would also be used for logistics, publicity and payment of ad hoc staff of the commission.
According to him, part of the fund would also be used for the settlement of legal expenses, capacity building seminars, voter education as well as monitoring and observation of the election.
The DSIEC chairman said that the main task of the commission in 2014 remained the elections for local government chairmen and councillors in the 25 local government areas of the state.
He said the election would be conducted in 466 wards and 3,625 polling units.
Ogbe held that election was a serious business, adding: “It is in this regard that DSIEC is desirous of improving on the feat attained by the other electoral management bodies in Nigeria.
“The commission will organise a seminar for stakeholders in February in order to conduct a responsible election.
“Through this seminar, the commission will have the opportunity to enlighten the public on the council election coming up as soon as the fund is released to the commission.”
The Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Patience Ajudua, told the commission to ensure credible council elections and assured it that the proposal would be considered.
