Veteran center-back Giorgio Chiellini has signed a two-year contract extension with Juventus, the Italian Serie A side has announced.
Having joined Juve from Fiorentina in 2005, Chiellini has scored 36 goals in 535 outings for the Bianconeri, and had been expected to leave the club this summer when his original contract expired on June 30.
But the return of former head coach Massimiliano Allegri, coupled with Chiellini’s outstanding performance at Euro 2020 and his ambitions to compete in the 2022 FIFA World Cup persuaded both club and player to agree to a new contract.
It is reported that Chiellini’s wages will be cut to 2.5 million euros per season.
“Best not to think about that, it’ll make me feel even older!” he laughed on Juventus TV, when considering his 17 years with the club.
“I am happy, even if it seems like a formality, these are important steps in life. I arrived here barely an adult and now I’m part of the family, a mature person who is enjoying every moment of the last years.
“I really hope that I can give my contribution and help this team to win more titles, which as we know here is the most important thing.
“In the end the signing was a formality, because as soon as I knew that my body would allow me to continue playing, there was always the will of both parties to continue together. It was just the timing of various situations that delayed this signing.
“The very close relationship between myself and Juventus goes beyond everything else. I had absolutely no doubts that I would remain here,” Chiellini said.
