Texaco Nigeria Outer Shelf, a subsidiary of Chevron Nigeria Limited, has donated a hybrid library to the Maryam Babangida Girls Science College, Minna, Niger State.
Speaking on Thursday at the commissioning and handover ceremony of the library, constructed and equipped with state-of-the art Information and Communication Technology equipment in Minna, the Director, DeepWater and Production sharing Contract of Chevron, Rick Kennedy, said education would unlock the potentials of youths and galvanise the people for progressive development.
According to Kennedy: “In addition to the social intervention programme by the Texaco Nigeria Outer Shelf Limited, the company and other partners have executed other social investment projects in Niger State.
“These include a science laboratory complex in Government Science College, Izom, a Chest Clinic donated to the Tuberculosis and Infectious Disease Hospital, Chanchaga, Minna.
“In all, since 2009, we have invested N8.4 billion in the Agbami scholarship programme as 16,300 students have benefitted across the country, out of which 715 graduated with first class degrees.
“A total of 80 students from Niger State have benefitted from Agbami scholarship programme, while additional 31 students have benefitted from another of our scholarship programs, the NNPC/CNL Joint Venture National Scholarship.”
In his remarks, the acting Governor of Niger State, Ahmed Mohammed Ketso, while commending the management of Chevron Nigeria Limited, called on other organisations and multinationals to support the educational sector in the state.
Ketso further urged students to imbibe the reading culture, adding: “Reading develops the mind; it’s a vital skill to be able to function in today’s society.
“We must resuscitate the reading culture in our schools.”
Earlier, the State Commissioner of Education, Hajia Fatima Madugu, stated that the government has expended over N3 billion in the renovation of nine schools across the state under its Whole School Approach Renovation.
Highlights of the ceremony, which had in attendance the Head of Service, Sule Alhaji Yabagi, and the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Dan Salau, had students perform various traditional dances.
