Chelsea sign Cesc Fabregas on five-year contract

Chelsea have confirmed that they have signed Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona on a five year contract, according to the club’s website.
Chelsea have been front runners to sign the former Arsenal captain since Barcelona confirmed that the midfielder would be allowed to leave the Nou Camp this summer, and the Blues have won the race to sign the Spaniard ahead of the likes of Manchester City, Manchester United and Liverpool.
The deal is thought to be in the region of £27 million, with Blues boss Jose Mourinho looking to build a potential title winning squad for next season.
Fabregas, who will wear the number 4 shirt vacated this summer by David Luiz, said of the deal: “Firstly I would like to thank everyone at FC Barcelona where I enjoyed three wonderful years. It was my childhood club and I will always be proud and honoured that I had a chance to play for such a great team.
“I do feel that I have unfinished business in the Premier League and now is the right time to return.
“I considered all the other offers very carefully and I firmly believe that Chelsea is the best choice. They match my footballing ambitions with their hunger and desire to win trophies. They have an amazing squad of players and an incredible manager. I am fully committed to this team and I can’t wait to start playing.”
Chelsea have already confirmed they are close to signing Diego Costa from Spanish champions Atletico Madrid for £32 million, but the deal for his Spanish colleague has now been wrapped up in what is a massive coup for the Stamford Bridge club.
Cesc’s former club Arsenal reportedly refused their first option on buying the player back from Spain, leaving Cesc no option but to choose another club to join, according to Sky Sports: “Yes, everyone knows that Arsenal had the first option to sign me. They decided not to take up this option and therefore it wasn’t meant to be. I wish them well in the future.”
Fabregas had been out of favour at Barcelona despite hitting 13 goals and 22 assists for Barcelona last season in all competitions.
Cesc returns to the Premier League three years after departing London for his boyhood club, but now at the age of 27 Fabregas will be looking to hit the peak of his career back in the Premier League.
