Following his declaration on Wednesday that henceforth June 12 be observed as Democracy Day in Nigeria and that some heroes of democracy be given national honours, President Muhammadu Buhari has directed the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mallam Shehu Malami to take immediate steps to publish the Presidential Order in the Federal Gazette.
Buhari had on Wednesday in a statement he personally signed directed that as from next year, May 29 will no longer be observed as Democracy Day and that the winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, Bashorun Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, be honoured with the ward of the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic.
In line with the directive, Buhari, in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, said Malami must immediately gazette the orders in order for the awards ceremony to hold on June 12.
Apart from Abiola, others to be honoured are his running mate, Ambassador Baba Gana Kingibe, with the GCFR title, and human rights lawyer, late Chief Gani Fawehinmi, as Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger.
Shehu added: “The President also directed that this should be done so that the awards slated for June 12, 2018 can go on as planned.”
