The Federal Road Safety Corps in Ebonyi has confirmed the death of a driver in a fatal crash between a Honda car and an articulated vehicle in Abakaliki.
Charles Edem, Head of Operations, FRSC, Ebonyi command, told the News Agency of Nigeria that the accident occurred on Wednesday night at Lopa Gas junction of the Abakaliki-Enugu Expressway.
Edem said that the driver of the Honda car was burnt beyond recognition while the driver of the articulated vehicle is in a critical condition.
He said that the driver of the articulated vehicle was probably repairing a fault beneath the vehicle when the Honda car hit it and caused an explosion.
He said: “We have deployed officers to cordon the area and ensure the return of normalcy.
“We are also making serious arrangements to tow both vehicles from the scene to ensure free flow of vehicular and pedestrian movements.”
An eye witness, who spoke under the condition of anonymity, told NAN that the Honda car’s driver was speeding when it rammed into the vehicle.
He added: “The articulated vehicle was stationed and the impact of the crash caused an explosion that totally razed the Honda car and also affected the articulated vehicle.”
