The good news keeps on coming for Emma Raducanu who realised her dream by winning the US Open as her new world ranking was confirmed.
The British teenage sensation won the Grand Slam as a qualifier – the first time anyone has done that in history.
The nation was gripped by her stunning run to the trophy at Flushing Meadows in New York, with more than nine million watching the Brit beat Canada’s Leylah Fernandez in the final on Channel 4 and many more on Prime Video.
Heading into the tournament, she was ranked 150 in the world and her position in the WTA world rankings is now considerably higher after he win.
The 18-year-old now finds herself at No. 23, remarkable considering she was 345 at the start of the year.
Raducanu has also overtaken Johanna Konta as the British No.1, a position she had held for a record breaking six consecutive years.
While her three weeks in New York have been focused on tennis, she has now been able to see the sights of the city.
Raducanu was taken aback at seeing her face on the huge billboards around Manhattan, and was also trending on social media after thanking her fans in China… in fluent Mandarin.
Raducanu will have a huge following in China, as her mother, Renee, hails from Shenyang. Her father, Ian, is from Bucharest, Romania. The teenage tennis ace was actually born in Canada, like her final opponent, but is a British citizen having moved to England at the age of two.
It is a remarkable story, one which is among the greatest in history.
Former British tennis player Barry Cowan told talkSPORT: “For me, it is the greatest story in sport. We’ve got to put it into context, here was Emma who only got a wildcard initially to qualifying for Wimbledon.
“Then they upgraded her to the main draw and then we know what happened with her amazing run on the grass and that unfortunate incident on the second Monday on court one where it all became a little too much for her.
“Then she had to reset and she has just absolutely breezed through the draw.
“In fact, the toughest set she has had was in the second round of qualifying.”
