Djokovic had an emotional end to his US Open as he left his post-match press conference in tears after losing the final to Daniil Medvedev.

In a post on social media, the 39-year-old American said the decision was made after “careful consideration” on the advice of her medical team.

He announced the decision to withdraw from the last Grand Slam of the year on his Instagram account. Federer, who recently went under the knife, said he needs more surgeries, which will keep him out of action for quite a few months.

Djokovic defeated Jan-Lennard Struff of Germany 6-4, 6-3 in the men’s singles, while aiming to become the first man to win all four Grand Slam titles and Olympic gold in the same year.

Williams looked supreme in the first set as a US Open final rematch against Naomi Osaka beckoned but Azarenka fought back superbly to win 1-6 6-3 6-3.

Djokovic, who has already been stripped of his $250,000 (£190,000) in prize money for reaching the last-16, was given a further punishment by tournament organisers for his actions on court against Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta.
