A candidate in Brazil’s October 5 presidential election was killed on Wednesday when a small private plane he was travelling in crashed in a residential area in Santos in Sao Paulo state.
The deceased, Eduardo Campos, 49, who died along with six other occupants, including the crew, in the crash, was the candidate of Brazilian Socialist Party in the election.
A DPA News Agency report said that the Cessna 560X plane was owned by Campos, adding that he was heading to Guaruja, near Sao Paulo, where he had scheduled for several campaigns towards the election.
The leader of the party, Carlos Siqueira, confirmed Campos’ death to TV channel, Globo, according to DPA news agency.
Brazilian aviation authorities said that the plane, which took off from Rio de Janeiro, failed to land due to bad weather.
According to the agency, for reasons that remained unknown, it crashed into several buildings in a residential neighbourhood in the port city of Santos, about 60 kilometres from Sao Paulo, Brazil’s commercial centre.
The agency said that Brazilian President, Dilma Rousseff, who is seeking a second term in elections, had cancelled all her engagements after the news of the plane crash was broken.
