The President, National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), Mr Igwe Achese, on Wednesday said that the union was on strike as speculated in some quarters.
Achese made this known during an interactive session with newsmen at the Petroleum Tankers Drivers conference in Abuja.
He spoke against the backdrop of the leadership crisis in Independent Marketers Association of Nigeria and the fuel scarcity in the country.
The president said the association had not ordered its member to go on strike over the development.
“NUPENG is not on strike and we will continue to sustain the activities the way we are asked to do and ensure the flow of products,” he said.
Achese said the current fuel crisis in the country had nothing to do with NUPENG, adding that the leadership crisis did not affect the flow of products.
While warning against panic buying of products, he urged Nigerians to disregard any threat from any quarters over the fuel supply.
“As for current ongoing scarcity, it has nothing to do with neither NUPENG nor the Nigeria Independent Petroleum Company and I want to beg Nigerians to go about their normal duties,” he said.
Achese explained further that the IPMAN President, Alhaji Aminu Abdulkadir, had completed his tenure and presently running an additional period.
He advised him to obey the court order that asked him to vacate his seat.
He said: “For Aminu Abdulkadir, he had completed his two tenures and presently running additional.
“So, we cannot hold the association whereby the president has been asked to leave by a competent law court and will still remain in office.
“We are appealing to various security agencies, including the DSS, police to be fair in this case and allow peace to reign.”
It will be recalled that a Federal High Court in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, presided over by Justice Lambo Akanbi, had set aside the appointment of Abdulkadir as national president of IPMAN.
The court said that the appointment of Abdulkadir, did not follow the laid down rules of the association.
The judge subsequently declared Chief Lawson Obasi as the substantive National President of IPMAN.
Abdulkadir had, however, appealed against the judgment and asked for a stay of execution pending the determination of the appeal.
