FG approves N28b for infrastructure in new FCT district

In its bid to decongest the Federal Capital City, the Federal Executive Council on Wednesday approved N28.11 billion for the provision of engineering infrastructure in the newly opened Wasa District.
Disclosing this was the Minister of Information, Labaran Maku, while briefing State House correspondents after the weekly FEC meeting.
The weekly cabinet  meeting was presided over by Vice President Namadi Sambo in the absence of President Goodluck Jonathan, who is attending the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
According to Maku, government would continue to pursue its policy of opening up new districts with a few to decongesting the city.
Also justifying the contract, the Minister of State for the FCT, Oloye Olajumoke Akinjide, explained that the contract specification included site clearance, sewage, water supply, electrical supply and street lighting, among others, for the 267-hectare district.
The contract is awarded in favour of Gilmor Construction Company.
Oloye Akinjide also said that opening up new districts would make available affordable housing sites for Nigerians as co-operatives and registered associations of workers in private and public service are favourably considered.
She said: “The project is in line with the establishment of FCT Satellite Development Agency, whose mandate is to provide infrastructural facilities and social amenities to satellite towns and rural areas of the FCT.
“In addition, the project, upon completion, will generate employment for at least 30 professionals, 50 technicians and 100 unskilled labourers.”
