The move to replace the former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, went a notch higher on Sunday night as the President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, convened a meeting of critical stakeholders of the party.
The meeting, which started at about 9pm on Sunday, is to agree on who to succeed Tukur ahead of the meeting of the National Executive Committee of the party already slated by Jonathan for Monday.
The ongoing meeting is being held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
President Jonathan is presiding.
Among those attending the meeting are Vice President Namadi Sambo; the President of the Senate, Senator David Mark; other leaders of the National Assembly; and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim.
Several governors are also attending the meeting.
Among them are Governors Emmanuel Uduaghan (Delta), Umar Dakingari (Kebbi), Babangida Aliyu (Niger), Martin Elechi (Ebonyi), Seriake Dickson (Bayelsa), Ibrahim Shema (Katsina), Gabriel Suswam (Benue), Godswill Akpabio (Akwa Ibom), Ibrahim Dakwambo (Gombe), Sullivan Chime (Enugu), Garba Umar (acting Governor of Taraba State) and Bala Ngilari (Deputy Governor of Adamawa State.
The Deputy National Chairman of the PDP, Uche Secondus, who was initially billed to act in Tukur’s stead before another National Convention is summoned to elect a substantive chairman, is also attending the meeting.
Newsmen were ordered to vacate the vicinity of the State House as they were told they were not invited for the meeting.
