The Ogun Sector Command of Federal Road Safety Corps on Tuesday said that 102 persons, including 10 children, died in 177 road accidents in the first quarter of 2019.
The Sector Commander, Clement Oladele, gave the figures in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Ota, Ogun.
According to Oladele, 473 people were injured from the accidents.
He said: “This year’s records represent a 50 per cent increase in road crashes and a 12 per cent increase in traffic deaths over our records of first quarter of last year.”
According to the sector commander, 454 persons were injured from accidents in the first quarter of 2018.
He said that avoidable deaths were a huge loss to governments and the society.
The sector commander said that road construction zones accounted for most accidents in Ogun.
He advised motorists to be cautious and adhere strictly to speed limits especially at construction sites.
