Reps to investigate dissolved Presidential Task Force on Pension Reforms

The House of Representatives says it will setup an ad hoc committee to investigate the activities of the dissolved Presidential Task Force on Pension Reforms.
This was sequel to the unanimous adoption of a motion by Rep. Ali Isa on Tuesday at the plenary.
Moving the motion earlier, Isa said the investigation will start from 2010 to the time of its dissolution in 2013.
He said the investigation had become necessary in order to account for the billions of naira recovered from several banks by the task force and to inform the public on the matter.
He recalled that the task force was set up in June, 2010 with the main objective of tracking and recovering pension funds of all public service retirees.
According to Isa, instead of the task force to discharge its mandate, it became embroiled in widespread allegations of looting of pension funds.
The lawmaker said that the task force has not been able to account for more than N200 billion as a result of which it was dissolved in February, 2013.
The legislator said the task force also investigated the Police and the Head of Service Pension Funds and more than N180 billion was alleged to have been recovered from various banks.
Isa said that more than 75,000 ghost pensioners were on the list, while genuine pensioners were left unattended to.
He expressed concern that since the dissolution of the task force, the public has not been informed of what became of the billions of naira recovered by the team.
The house, therefore, resolved to set up an ad hoc committee to investigate the activities of the task force, those of any successor agencies and report back to the house in six weeks for further legislative action.
