Owing to what it termed unfavourable security reports, the Save Nigeria Group has cancelled the thank you rally it fixed for tomorrow at the Gani Fawehinmi Park, Lagos.
Spokesman of the group, Yinka Odumakin, who spoke with The Eagle Online, said that reports reaching the SNG were that the government had “shipped” militants into Lagos from Abuja with the aim of unleashing terror on those at the rally.
Odumakin said: “You must have heard what happened in Kano this evening.
“Kano was also to be a protest point tomorrow. And then imagine what happened this evening.
“Abuja has deployed militants into Lagos as at this evening. They are camped in various hotels all over Lagos.
“The instruction we learnt is for the militants to shoot during the rally, killing people and causing confusion.”
Odumakin, who commiserated with the victims of the Kano bomb blast, said it was not as if the SNG has given up entirely, adding: “We will still have a few things tomorrow. But we are keeping that very close to our chest.”
Asked if Prof. Wole Soyinka was still going to be a part of tomorrow’s programme, the SNG spokesman said the Nobel Laureate missed his flight and is now being expected tomorrow.
He added: “We are being extremely careful so we won’t have blood spilled on the basis of what is meant to be a peaceful gathering.
But we are not giving up. It is a long drawn battle and not just a one-day affair.
“The government is looking for every means of declaring a state of emergency in Lagos State and we won’t provide them the platform to do so.
“We don’t want to play into their hands.”
Odumakin said that by tomorrow morning, the group will notify Nigerians of the next line of action.
