The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Malam Abubakar Malami (SAN), has identified terrorism and corruption as the factors fueling human trafficking, criminality and migration.
This was contained in a statement by Salihu Isah, his Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, in Abuja on Sunday.
Malami said this at a meeting with an Italian delegation led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Paolo Silveri.
He said this at the finalisation of the MoU to strengthen cooperation between the judicial systems of the two countries in Abuja on Sunday.
He said reduction in the incidents of human trafficking and other similar crimes could be achieved through effective cooperation.
According to him, the agreements between Nigeria and Italy are ready for execution.
The minister said the agreements were in the areas of mutual legal assistance, transfer of prisoners and extradition agreements.
He, therefore, urged the delegation to identify the right timeline and venue for the execution of the said agreements.
Malami applauded the Italian Government’s support to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons in particular and Nigeria in general.
He solicited further assistance to strengthen the skills and capacity of the agency’s personnel.
Responding, Silveri said the delegation was perfectly aware of the nexus among criminality, human trafficking and migration.
Silveri added that they were seeking collaboration with the Federal Government of Nigeria to cement existing political and economic relationships..
He said Italian authorities were also seeking effective collaboration in managing migration from Nigeria to Libya and from Libya to Italy.
