A United States of America-based technocrat, Prince Onuoha Igwe, has revealed the rationale behind his recent withdrawal from the 2023 Abia State gubernatorial race.
He was also the gubernatorial candidate of All Grand Alliance Party in the last general elections in Abia State.
Speaking in a statement on Thursday, Igwe hinted that his withdrawal from the 2023 race was necessitated by the alleged undemocratic practices of most of the political parties in Nigeria, especially imposition of candidates on members.
He regretted that Nigeria’s political parties have abandoned competences and merit for the highest bidding on the issuance of party tickets to aspirants jostling for elective political seats in Abia State and Nigeria as a whole.
He also attributed the fruitless efforts of patriotic and well-meaning Abians towards achieving an economically and infrastructurally stable Abia State to the penchant by most party leaders foisting unpopular candidates on the citizenry.
Igwe further decried the controversies and exchange of political brickbats by political leaders and groups in Abia State over power shift, otherwise known as “Abia charter of equity”, which encouraged rotation of office of the governor among the three senatorial districts, namely Abia North, Abia Central and Abia South.
He noted that zoning had never addressed the core yearnings of the people or foster the needed economic growth and nfrastructural development in Abia State.
He further maintained that the Peoples Democratic Party and All Progressives Congress have failed to justify the mandate given to them by the electorate at all levels.
Continuing, Igwe opined that the masses are fed up with the parties for presiding a divided Nigeria, adding that the masses must get it better at this moment by using their Permanent Voter Cards to effect the desired changes and elect candidates with transformational blueprints to enhance the welfare of the people and development in all parts of Abia State.
His words: “These dominant political parties have failed in all indices to provide dividends of democracy to the doorsteps of the people.
“Lives have become unbearable to the people, due to the inability of those in authority at all levels in the state and the country to create a better environment, and also come up with a well defined policies and programmes towards fostering the needed human, economic and Infrastructural growths and development in Abia.”
It would be recalled that Igwe had in March 2022 at a press conference in Umuahia, the state capital, declared his intention to run for the position of Governor of Abia State in the 2023 general elections.
He had also said he would disclose the platform to actualise his 2023 gubernatorial bid.
