Over 2,000 youths have received Nigeria Red Cross Society training on disaster management skills in four states.
The Head of Learning and Organizational Development of the NRC, Andronicus Adeyemo, said a three-day psychosocial workshop for volunteers, safety organizations and other stakeholders from Adamawa, Borno, Yobe and Plateau States was put together for the purpose.
Speaking at the event in Jos, Plateau State, Adeyemo said that humanitarian workers needed logistic and practical information on psychosocial first aid and supportive communication during and after disaster operations.
The workshop was meant to build the capacity humanitarian workers on how to give psychosocial support during disaster operations and equip them with the technical skills on community-based psychosocial support for post disaster period.
Adeyemo said that when people are affected by conflict or man made and natural disasters, their total being is neglected, especially the psychological wounds which are invisible and difficult to heal.
Adeyemo added: “The main focus of humanitarian worker during and after disaster is the physical assistance of food and clothing.
“This psychological wound, if care is not taken, leads to other disorder and have negative effects on the society.”
