Several persons have been confirmed dead when suicide bombers struck on Tuesday in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.
The bombers were believed to be heading to the facility of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation on the Maiduguri-Damboa Road.
However, they were stopped at a military checkpoint before they got to the NNPC facility.
The soldiers on duty reportedly shot at the vehicle after the discovering those in it were suspicious characters, leading to the detonation of the explosives.
Four out of the suspected bombers were said to have died.
Scores of civilians around the scene were also confirmed dead.
Some of the soldiers at the checkpoint were equally injured.
The Director of Defence Information, Major General Chris Olukolade, confirmed the development.
