UniJOS constructs state-of-the-art medical collage

The University of Jos, Plateau State has awarded a contract for the construction of a state-of-the-art building towards the commencement of activities at its new Medical College in the Jos University Teaching Hospital permanent site, Lamingo.
The project is being funded through a Special Intervention Grant by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund.
In a statement by the Deputy Registrar, Information and Publications, University of Jos, Steve Otowo, the university said the project has reached an advance stage.
The statement said the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Hayward Mafuyai, during the swearing-in and induction of 60 newly qualified Medical Doctors from the institution, also tasked the doctors to shun all unethical practices that could prove detrimental to their calling of saving lives but instead should seek to attain the highest professional standards of health care service delivery.
Mafuyai commended all staff of the university’s Faculty of Medical Sciences for ensuring academic activities continued uninterrupted even during the period of crises in Jos.
The Registrar, Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, Dr. Abdul Mumuni Ibrahim, advised the new doctors to adhere strictly to the ethics of the profession and conduct themselves properly whether in or outside medical practice.
The Registrar, who was represented by Dr. Victor Gbenro, an Alumnus of the University of Jos, stressed the need for young doctors to allow themselves to be mentored by their senior colleagues, noting that medical practice is like an apprenticeship where learning is a continues process.
Ibrahim explained that the new doctors would be given Provisional Registration Certificates by the MDCN, which would enable them obtain entry into the internship training programme for two years.
He said the Council and the Federal Ministry of Health attach great importance to the internship training programme due to the limited facilities available to train young doctors.
The Dean, Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of Jos, Prof. Nuhu Dakum, explained that induction is a mandatory process that legally empowers inductees to commence a medical career having fulfilled all academic and professional requirements.
Dakum disclosed that the University Administration has approved the take-off of the College of Medical Sciences, which he believes will improve the international profile of the University.
He charged the new doctors to seriously consider specializing in the field of Human Medicine so that they can contribute their quota in service of humanity.
Dr. P.O. Binite, who was honoured as a Medical Elder during the occasion, advised the new doctors to ensure they are always found worthy both in character and in learning.
Speaking on behalf of the newly qualified doctors, Dr. Alexander Phillip Omede, expressed optimism that their entry into the medical profession would herald a new era of innovations, positive change and resolution of all industrial unrest in medical practice in Nigeria.
