The Delta State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, has urged Nigerians to imbibe the habit of proper disposal of refuse and clearing of drains to reduce flooding and filth in their neighbourhoods.
Governor Uduaghan made the call on Monday while inspecting the construction work on the old Lagos/Asaba Road at Agbor.
He observed that most of the flooding witnessed in the country were caused by people’s poor attitude towards the environment, asserting that it was important for people to dispose their refuse properly.
The governor also frowned at the habit of dumping of refuse in the drains, reiterating that such habits block the drains and cause flooding and erosion.
According to him: “People do not appreciate the importance of drainages.
“Over 70 per cent of our flooding problems are caused by our attitude towards the environment, especially the clearing of drains.”
While expressing satisfaction at the level of work done at the old Lagos/Asaba Road, Agbor, the governor admitted that the contractor had challenges, which hampered the progress of work but promised to constantly monitor the project for it to be delivered on time and to specifications.
“Government gave out the construction of this road some years back. I think their (contractor’s) major challenge was the bridge across Orogodo River, they were slow, but from what I am seeing here, you will appreciate the progress of work,” he added.
He disclosed that the ongoing removal of illegal structures in Warri and its environs was a project that would be implemented in all parts of the state, stating that Deltans should imbibe friendly attitudes towards the environment by removing shanties, planting trees and flowers.
Uduaghan, who also inspected the fly over at Inter Bau Roundabout, Asaba, commended the contractor handling the project for the quality and pace of work, promising that the contractor will meet the December completion deadline for the delivery of the project.
Governor Uduaghan, who also visited Ogbemudien Secondary School, Agbor and Owa Model Secondary School, Boji Boji, Owa, expressed satisfaction at the quality of work done on the projects, adding that the sporting facilities were meant to develop young athletes for the state to remain first in sporting activities in the country.
He informed that the Ministry of Education (Basic and Secondary) and the Sports Council would work out modalities for coaches to be sent to schools to revive school sports in the model schools where special sporting facilities have been built.
