The Register, Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria, Prof. Josiah Ajiboye, says teachers’ tribunal will soon be inaugurated in each state of the federation to address teacher misconduct in the country.
Josiah made this disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja on Monday while commenting on the recent cases of child molestation by some teachers in schools.
He said the council would establish the tribunal in partnership with the state governments to check misconduct among registered teachers.
The registrar urged teachers to always abide by the ethics of the profession to avoid sanction.
He said the council was empowered to withdraw the license and certificate of any teacher caught in any form of misconduct.
Ajiboye said: “We have given teachers the professional standard, the code of conduct and the code of practice in the country.
“With these two instruments TRCN has equipped the teachers to know where their boundaries are and any teacher that runs contrary to such law will face sanction.
“As it is done in other professions, your certificate and license of practice can be withdrawn and TRCN is empowered to do this.
“As a teacher you are to serve as loco parentis; to look after the children and not to molest our children. Such a teacher is not worthy to stand in the society because teachers are respected.”
He said that the people caught in such nefarious acts were those who just migrated into the teaching profession because “real teachers” were accustomed to the ethics of the profession.
Ajiboye said the council investigated some reports of child molestation by teachers brought to its notice.
He explained that if the teacher being accused was registered, an investigative panel would be set up to investigate such a teacher.
