The Ebonyi State Commissioner for Commerce, Industry and Business Development, Dr. Stephen Odo, has urged Nigerians, especially the wealthy and privileged ones, to give back to society by helping the needy and less privileged.
The Commissioner said this on Saturday in Enugu while delivering a lecture, titled: “Importance of Service to Humanity.”
This was at the Public Presentation of Lion Lawrence Nze as the third president of Enugu Metropolitan Lions Club, 2021/2022.
Odo noted that leaders become great for their services and impact on the lives of people within their society and their memories last long through the indelible services offered during their lifetime.
According to him: “There is no higher religion but to work for the common good of all as well as meeting the needs of others to make the world a better place.
“We must help the weak, uplift the souls of the downtrodden and ensure that lack and poverty are kicked out in our environment and neighbourhoods.
“As humans, we are expected by God Almighty to contribute our quota to better humanity.”
On the new President, Nze, Odo said that he had changed the face of Small and Medium Enterprise in Ebonyi State by digitalising its activities and brought a lot of innovations to the benefit of youths in the state.
“Nze has shown us in Ebonyi State, which is well acknowledged by the state government, that one can make a great difference that can alleviate poverty and support government innovations that improves lives, especially that of youths,” he said.
Presenting Nze, District Governor 404 A2 Nigeria, Lion Lynda Odu-Okpeseyi, charged the Enugu Metropolitan Lions Club to keep the flame burning and ensure that its humanitarian programmes for the year are successfully completed.
Odu-Okpeseyi, who was represented by past District Governor, Lion Nsikan Bassey, called on Nze and his new board to continue to expand the club and seek people of like minds to further provide humanitarian services for the benefit of humanity.
“I am happy the Eastern bloc of Lions Club International is growing and having greater impact on lives within the South-East and I sincerely pray that this flame keeps burning at a higher rate,” she said.
Responding, Nze assured that he would be “fully dedicated” to promoting all ideals of the club and ensuring its success in 2022, adding: “We will continue to do our best to push our humanitarian services forward.
“It is my desire to create a standard for professionalism, transparency and accountability for our noble club.”
The event featured the induction of five new members and award of “Excellent Humanitarian Services” to 11 distinguished Nigerians.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Lion Clubs International is the world’s largest service clubs organisation with over 14 million men and women volunteers dedicated to making a difference in the world in over 48,000 clubs and about 210 countries and geographical areas.
