The Taraba State House of Assembly has empowered the Deputy Governor of the state, Garba Umar, to act in the absence of the Governor, Danbaba Suntai, who is away in Germany for treatment, following a plane crash.
The lawmakers empowered Umar with a resolution passed on Wednesday.
This was done by invoking Section 190 of the 1999 Constitution.
Section 190 of the 1999 Constitution reads: “Whenever the Governor transmits to the Speaker of the House of Assembly a written declaration that he is proceeding on vacation or that he is otherwise unable to discharge the functions of his office, until he transmits to the Speaker of the House of Assembly a written declaration to the contrary such functions shall be discharged by the Deputy Governor as Acting Governor.”
The motion, under matters of urgent public importance, was moved by the Majority Leader, Charles Maijankai.
