Senators split across party lines over alleged militarization of the 2019 general elections in some states as the Senate agreed to investigate perceived inconsistent application of the electoral law during elections.
Division among the senators over the militarization of elections was as result of motion sponsored by Senator Dino Melaye with seven other senators.
Trouble started after Melaye concluded his debate and opportunity was given to the Minority Leader of the Senate, Senator Biodun Olujinmi, to speak on the motion.
Olujinmi in her submission said the election was a sham and the Independent National Electoral Commission parameters were different in different states.
According to her: “We are Nigerians and we are in Nigeria.
“What is wrong is wrong.
“This election was a sham.
“INEC parameters were different in different states.
“There is no wrong that can validate the other.”
Olujimi added that there is the need to look at the nation’s electoral process.
She said: “Rigging and vote buying was the order of the day.
“The lawmakers need to look into this.”
Olujinmi’s statement led the Senate into a rowdy session before the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, called for calm as senators elected on the platform of All Progressives Congress in the chamber kicked against the position of Olujimi, elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party.
At the end of the rowdiness in the chamber, the Senate mandated its Committee on INEC to investigate the perceived inconsistent application of laws by the Electoral body during the 2019 General election.
The Senate also urged INEC to ensure the unrestricted and consistent application of all electoral laws without bias to a candidate or a party in all elections.
