The Primate, Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), the Most Rev. Nicholas Okoh, on Tuesday called on Nigerians to use Christmas celebration to work for the peace and development of the country.
Okoh gave the advice in his Christmas message during a service held at the Cathedral Church of the Advents, Gwarinpa, Abuja.
The cleric stressed that Nigeria could only develop when there is harmonious coexistence among the citizens.
The Bishop dwelt his preaching on the birth and life of Jesus, particularly pointing out Jesus’s traits as the prince of peace, counselor and saviour.
He said: “Celebrating Jesus’ birth is a recognition that He brought us new light and means to repent and be forgiven.
“As we celebrate, let’s reflect on events that marked our lives in the past years and also shape our lives better in the future.
“As we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, we are celebrating life. Whoever believes in Him gets spiritual power.
“As we mark this day, we should take note of the words we use in our daily lives as they impact on our lives.
“If we rightfully select the words we use, we can positively impact the lives of people around us.”
Primate Okoh called on the people to be security conscious and cooperate with security operatives as the 2019 elections draws nearer.
He urged the government at all levels to live up to their responsibility of protecting lives and property.
He said: “Christmas celebration is a call to all Nigerians to work for the peace of the country, against the background of insecurity that have being taking our lives in the past few years, so that 2019 will be full of God’s fairness and justice for Nigeria.
“So that everybody will be comfortable, confident that we have a country and that the Prince of peace will reign to His glory.
“So, we plead with everyone to be a promoter of peace and to give information to security agents for success of their operation, so that everyone of us can rejoice.
“It should not be left in the hands of security operatives alone.”
The Primate said the essence of Christmas was to remember the less privileged in the society by demonstrating love through sharing material things like food, clothes among others.
He also called on politicians in Nigeria to abide by the principles of elections as set out by the Independent National Electoral Commission to avoid incessant killings and destruction of lives and properties.
For the 2019 elections, the Primate prophesied that INEC, all security agencies, political parties and all their candidates would do righteousness and be satisfied with the outcome of the elections.
Special prayers and Christmas carols were rendered in the church for the celebration.
