Police confirm fracas at a Catholic Church in Abuja, say nobody died

Pandemonium broke out early Sunday at a Catholic Church at Nyanyan area in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) as mob attempted to burn down the Church.
It was gathered that trouble started when an Okada rider who dropped a passenger in front of the church was said to have been apprehended by the soldiers who allegedly tortured him.
On regaining freedom, the Okada rider, a Muslim, was said to have gone to mobilize his colleagues who immediately stormed the area, attempting to burn down the church.
In the process, the Church officials locked up the doors to prevent the mob from attacking the worshipers. To arrest the situation, the army and police immediately mobilized to the scene and eventually brought the situation under control.

When contacted by the Eagle Online, the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, Hyelhira Altine Daniel confirmed the development but insisted the Okada rider was not tortured.
She said, it was just a misunderstanding between military personnel and Okada rider, adding that the FCT Police Command immediately mobilized to contain the situation.
On the reported death of the okada man, Altine Daniel denied it, insisting nobody died and that all the Christians faithful in the church went home peacefully.

Her words, “Yes, there was a misunderstanding between a military man and an okada man in front of the church.
“So, the okada man went back to mobilize and we got wind of it. We immediately mobilized our men the situation in now under control. Nobody was tortured, nobody died,” she stressed.
Owing to frequency of attacks on churches, authorities in the FCT often deploy security personnel to major churches in Abuja every Sunday, as part of the security measures.
