The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has accused the Peoples Democratic Party of instigating its youths to attack the venue of its governorship rally in Okirika area of the state.
Some of the equipment to be used for the rally have been damsged.
The governorship candidate of the APC in Rivers State, Hon. Dakuku Peterside, is billed to campaign in Okirika on Saturday (today) in continuation of his campaign across the state.
However, as the venue was being put in place for the rally, armed youths from Igbri, a community that borders Oba Ama, from where the First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, hails, stormed the place.
According to the Chairman of the APC in Okirika, Christian Asifamaka, the armed youths stormed the field of the National School, venue of the rally in Okirika, in the wee hours of Saturday at about 3:45am, shooting sporadically.
Those setting up the sound system and the podium were said to have been forced to flee for their lives.
Asifamaka said: “At about 4am they started shooting explosives into the arena and destroyed the podium, sound equipment and some canopies.
“Okrika is the home of Nigeria’s First Lady Mrs Patience Jonathan. She was present and held the PDP governorship rally at the same venue on Thursday January 22, 2015.
“The boys came in a white hiace bus and allegedly came in from Igbiri a community that shares borders with Mrs. Jonathan’s Oba Ama community.”
