The Academic Staff Union of Universities has pleaded with students of the University of Osun to be calm in order to give room for thorough investigation into their grievances, for which they took to the streets.
The union’s President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, made the appeal in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Thursday in Lagos against the backdrop of the protest embarked upon by students of the institution on Wednesday.
Reports said that the students had embarked on a violent protest over the alleged disappearance of one of their colleagues on Tuesday, July 4.
The missing student was said to be in 400 level in the Department of Microbiology.
The protesting students had also alleged that prior to this time, two 400 level students of the Department of Computer Engineering in the institution had also in September 2016 disappeared mysteriously.
Ogunyemi said: “I will like to call on the protesting students of this university to be calm and allow concerned authorities do their work.
“It is indeed a sad development and must be looked into as quickly as possible.
“The entire saga is just a reflection of the general insecurity and also what we have been saying about our campuses and the system generally.
“We have been harping on the need for improve security arrangements for both students and staff of our system, but no one seems to be paying attention.
“It is indeed a challenge for all of us.
“For the protesting students, my appeal is for them to calm down just as we call on government of the state to investigate the matter comprehensively and take appropriate actions to forestall future occurrences.”
