Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State has commiserated with the First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, on the death of her mother, describing the late Madam Charity Oba as a woman of character.
In a condolence letter to the First Lady, Governor Oshiomhole said: “It is with great shock that I received the reports of the death of Mama, Chief (Mrs) Charity Oba, in a ghastly motor accident Tuesday along the Port Harcourt-Yenagoa expressway. On behalf of myself, my family, government and people of Edo State, please accept our heartfelt condolences at this difficult moment. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
“Personally, I did not have the privilege of meeting her, but from what I have heard and read about her, it is doubtless she was a matriarch of character, the more reason her passing is painful.
“As one philosopher aptly puts it, ‘God cannot be everywhere, so He created mothers’. Mama (fondly called Mama Sisi) was obviously your own guardian angel. Your Excellency, your own life story speaks to exemplary fortitude, uncommon focus and stellar courage. Despite losing your biological mother in your teenage years, you pulled yourself by the bootstraps and rose above all odds to become who you are today.
“There is, therefore, no prize for guessing to what extent Mama helped shape the woman of substance you are today. It then becomes easier to appreciate the bond that existed between her and your good self and the significant portion she represents in your own narrative. When she took ill not too long ago and had to receive treatment in a faraway land, you created time to be by her bedside.
“As painful as Mama’s passing is, to us in Edo State, we are comforted that she led a worthy life. May the Almighty God grant her eternal rest and grant you and your family the fortitude to bear this irreplaceable loss. Amen.”
