Okiro to IGP: You must probe Rivers CP

The Police Service Commission has ordered the immediate investigation of the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Mbu Joseph Mbu, over his role in the ongoing crisis in Rivers State.
The Chairman of the Police Service Commission, Mike Okiro, revealed this during President Goodluck Jonathan’s commissioning of the ‘Goodluck Jonathan Housing Estate,’ at Pipeline Road, Idimu, Lagos State.
According to Okiro, if Mbu is found wanting, he would be dealt with accordingly.
His words: “It is simple.
“The Governor (Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State) has written me.
“He made far reaching accusations and allegations against the Commissioner of Police.
“And human right dictates that if there is any accusation against any party, you must hear from that other party.
“That’s what the law says.
“So I have passed that information to the IG (Mohammed Abubakar) to investigate the CP Rivers.
“If the Commissioner of Police is found wanting, if he had gone against the ethic of the police, he would be dealt with accordingly.
“Before we do that, we want to make sure he is given a fair hearing, which is what we’re doing now.”
The Minister for Police Affairs, Navy Captain Caleb Olubolade (rtd), said people should allow the police to do its work with respect to the crisis in Rivers State.
Olubolae added: “The police will investigate situations that occurred.
“The police have their modus operandi.
“Incidentally, the Police Service Commission chairman is here with me.
“He was once an Inspector General of Police.
“They know the rules.
“We’ll not really interfere with how the services run because they have their guidelines which they follow.
“If they find the Rivers CP not to have met the standard, they’ll know what to do.
“But the public should not be worried about that because that’s an internal matter for the police and we should allow them to preside over their internal matters.
“The discipline must be maintained.
“The decorum, the way the police carry out their duty must be maintained.
“We should leave it to them, so that they can serve us better as a people.”
