The Ogun State Muslim Council has commended President Bola Tinubu on the Tax Reform Bill, targeted at harmonising multiple taxes in Nigeria, imploring all stakeholders to exercise caution and protect all interest in the passage and implementation of the proposed Bill.
The commendation was contained in a communique signed by OMC Secretary-General, Alhaji Kamaldeen Akintunde.
The communique was issued at the end of the body’s general meeting which was held on Sunday, December 8, 2024 in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, deliberating on international, national, state and local issues.
“The body thanked President Tinubu for setting up a special committee to liaise with the National Assembly to harmonise all positions and address concerns.
Similarly, OMC commended the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria over its accountability on refund to pilgrims for services not rendered as reimbursed by the Saudi Arabia authority, urging the Commission to always be Allah conscious in the discharge of its responsibilities.
The communique as signed by the Council’s Scribe reads in part: “Muslim Participation in Politics and Governance: OMC urged Muslims to be active participants in the governance of Ogun State and Nigeria by extension. The meeting adopted the resolution of MUSWEN’s Committee on Political Action and Good Governance (CoPAGG) on the sensitization of Muslims to take interest in political activities and have broad based participation and representation in all political parties. It resolved to support Muslims who showed interest in politics to develop Ogun State and Nigeria.

“Inauguration of Statutory Committees: The OMC inaugurated five Statutory Committees which include: Education, Islamic Affairs, Finance, Public Affairs, and General Purpose Committees. The members of the committees cut across the four divisions and zones of the State – Egba, Ijebu, Remo and Yewa.
“While inaugurating the committee, the Secretary General of OMC, Alhaji Kamaldeen Akintunde explained that the committees will serve as the platform for the initiation and execution of the progranmes, activities and projects of OMC in order to realise its mission and vision. In his acceptance speech on behalf of other members of the committees, the chairman of the Education Committee and Chairman of the Muslim Community of Olabisi Onabanjo University, Professor Mikail Lasun Gbadamosi promised to discharge their duties as expected.
“NSCIA and MUSWEN Interventions: The meeting also noted the efforts of Nigeria Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) in the implementation of one of the pillars of Islam, Zakat, financial and economic empowerment of Muslims in Ogun State. The NSCIA through its NGO’s initiatives – Mission for Education, Social and Health (MESH) recently empowered 19 artisans and 24 students with another beneficiary receiving N1 million. Similarly, MUSWEN extended the scholarship it coordinated for the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Saad Abubakar targeting female medical students with beneficiaries from Ogun State.
“Also, as part of efforts to promote health of Muslims in Ogun State and prevent diseases, MUSWEN in collaboration with OMC has finalized arrangements to organise free medical outreach programmes in the State. The meeting therefore called on Muslim philanthropists and Islamic organisations in Ogun State to support these initiatives, expand them and develop a strategic blueprint to make them scalable and sustainable.
“Out of School Children – Representatives of OMC attended a retreat in Abuja organized by the National Commission on Al-Majiri and Out of School Children Education (NCAOOSCE). Going by the resolutions of the retreat, OMC resolved to develop a strategic document on how to return the out of school children to active formal education.
“OMC Resolution on Alleged Destruction of Mosque: The meeting decided that the Area Comptroller of the Idiroko Service Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) be appreciated for peaceful resolution and magnanimity to personally lay the foundation of the mosque in a comfortable new site with the construction reaching linted level”.
Meanwhile, the meeting hailed Governor Dapo Abiodun N1.054 trillion proposed 2025 appropriation Bill, especially for allocating the highest percentage of the budget to education and substantial amounts to capital expenditure.
It further urged the State House of Assembly under the leadership to ensure due diligence in the consideration of the bill and its passage to law.
OMC expressed concerns over the humanitarian crisis in Palestine, Syria and Lebanon over the years.
It enjoined all countries of the world through the United Nations to take decisive measures in the restoration of peace and normalcy to the countries, calling for immediate cease-fire between Israel and Palestine, as well as sustain the relative peace in Lebanon and Syria.
