October 1: Ogun bars commercial vehicles, motorcycles from roads, imposes curfew

The Ogun State Government has barred commercial vehicles and motorcycles from roads in the state as the country marks its 60th Independence Anniversary, just as it imposed an eight-hour curfew.

The spokesman of the Ogun State Police Command, Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed the development in a statement on Wednesday.

Oyeyemi said the steps were taken in order to prevent anyone taking advantage of the holiday and celebration to foment trouble, adding that the curfew was from 10pm on Wednesday till 6am on Thursday.

He said the state government has decided to mark the anniversary low key, adding: “Mindful of the likelihood of some elements seizing the opportunity to foment trouble, the State government has among other measures directed that commercial vehicles and motorcycles be restricted from plying major roads in the State.

“A curfew has also been imposed from 10:00pm to 6:00am starting from today 30th of September 2020.

“In view of this, the Ogun State Police Command has activated all its operational units including tactical squads across the state to deal with trouble makers in the most decisive manner.

“The command will be synergising with other security agencies in this regard.

“The Command is therefore by this release appealing to members of the public to adhere strictly to the directives of the State government as violators will be made to feel the weight of the law.

“The Commissioner of Police, CP Edward Awolowo Ajogun, while felicitating with good people of Ogun State on the Diamond Jubilee of the Nation advises them to be wary of criminal and disgruntled elements who may be bent on fomenting trouble before, during and after independence day celebration and quickly inform security agencies of any strange movement or gathering within their areas.

“He also appeals to parents to warn their wards not to be part of any activity capable of undermining the peace and tranquility presently being enjoyed by the good people of the State as such will be viewed with all seriousness.”
