NIM calls for strong institutions, announce ANMC

The Nigerian Institute of Management on Tuesday said that Nigeria needed a shift from relying on strong men to building strong institutions that could be relied on.
The President of NIM, Prof. Olukunle Iyanda, made the call at a news conference organised by the institute to announce its Annual National Management Conference.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the conference which is expected to host about 2,000 participants will hold between August 16 and August 18 at Afficient Event Centre, Kano.
The theme for 2018 ANMC is, “Re-engineering Leadership for National Transformation”.
Iyanda said: “Re-engineering helps any organisation, whether a country or business to be where it needs to be given its endowments, competencies and capabilities.
He said shifting focus to strong institutions was one re-engineering element Nigeria needed to emerge from poverty and backwardness to affluence and development within a short period.
He said: “Strong men are human, and therefore mortal. Strong institutions are immortal and more enduring. They are less susceptible to manipulation and corruption.
“Being inanimate, they do not have personal ambitions that can lead to decisions that are motivated by base human characteristics as self-serving and self-aggrandisement.”
The NIM president said nations which include Turkey, Japan, Malaysia and China had transformed from underdeveloped to developed nations because of their appropriate structural organisation and determined leadership.
He said: “These countries have re-engineered both their leadership and mindset, and reoriented the citizenry and their way of doing things.”
Iyanda pledged the institute’s determination to continue to improve management practices both at the micro, corporate and the macro governmental levels.
He said: “We will neither relent in our quest to bequeath a well-trained and productive workforce to the nation.
“Nor will we be tired until mismanagement, maladministration, corruption and other vices which have hampered Nigeria’s development are exceptions rather than the rule.”
