The Nigerian Bar Association, Onitsha branch has expressed displeasure over what it called the “indifference” by the Anambra State Government to resolve the ongoing strike by the state branch of Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria.
This was contained in a statement signed by Chukwudi Obieze, the Chairman of the NBA, Onitsha Branch and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria in Onitsha on Sunday.
The statement described the situation as “very sad”.
It said: “Other state governments have found ways of resolving issues with JUSUN chapters in their various states but Anambra is left behind.
“The Nigerian Bar Association Onitsha Branch is not happy with the present situation where the courts have remained shut since January 2, 2015.
“This is a situation which is neither obtainable nor desirable in a democratic society.
“The yearnings of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria, which gave rise to the strike action is in tandem with the provisions of the constitution.
“The courts have remained shut for too long and it is time the Anambra Government ensures that the strike is called off.”
The statement noted that JUSUN strike in Enugu, Ebonyi, Delta, Lagos, Bayelsa and some other states had been called off, adding that it seems the Anambra State Government was not disturbed by the strike.
It urged the government to respect the provisions of the constitution as regards to the independence of the judiciary.
