National Conference committee backs removal of fuel subsidy

The National Conference Committee on Public Finance has recommended the total removal of fuel subsidy.
The committee said Nigerians pay the lowest for fuel in Sub-sahara Africa.
Already, the body language of some of the delegates kicked against the recommendation on removal of fuel subsidy
The recommendation on removal of petroleum subsidy was sequel to the advice of stakeholders in the petroleum sector like the Nigeria Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative.
The committee, in the report currently being debated at the plenary of the National Conference, said removal of subsidy will discourage smuggling and ensure the availability of the product.
The committee added in its report that Nigerians are not benefiting from the fuel subsidy.
This is will be the second time in a week that a committee will recommend the removal of fuel subsidy.
It could be recalled that last week in a report submitted by the Senate Committee on Finance, chaired by Senator Ahmed Makarfi, it was recommended that fuel subsidy should be removed.
