Just as the harmattan period for this year sets in, the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency on Wednesday assured Nigerians using the nation’s airspace of their safety.
Supo Atobatele, the agency’s spokesman, gave the assurance in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos.
NAN reports that there used to be poor visibility during the period, resulting in flight delays and cancellations by airline operators.
Atobatele said that the agency had newly established the Total Radar Coverage of Nigeria, whose role is to guide pilots when they are about to take-off.
He said: “The Air Traffic Controllers can as well advise pilots to circumvent a particular cloudy environment.
“All our navigational aids like instrument landing system were just calibrated and are in good working condition, just as the field lighting at the major airports are working perfectly.”
Atobatele urged pilots to ensure observing the international standards of seeing a distance of not less than 1,200 metres visibility ahead, before taking-off.
He said: “This is the prescribed weather minimal standard.
“If the visibility is below the prescribed weather minimal at any of the airports, the pilots will be advised appropriately by the traffic controllers.”
